Building better bridges between training & employment

Riipen solves a core challenge facing job-seekers and training providers: the work experience gap. Training programs solve the skills gap and reduce “education friction” (the time, cost, and uncertainty associated with upskilling). But to successfully land a job, workers who are upskilling are also facing an experience gap, as they encounter “hiring friction”: the reluctance of employers to hire candidates who haven’t already proven that they can do the job. Riipen was designed to successfully bridge workers from training to jobs, by addressing the experience gap and reducing or eliminating hiring friction for employers.

The Council of Independent Colleges selects 25 member institutions to form inaugural work-based learning consortium

Since its founding in 1956, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) has created a network of more than 700 nonprofit independent colleges and universities, state-based councils of independent colleges, and other higher education affiliates. With a focus on future-proofing their member institutions, helping students who may not have the time to devote to an internship that can last for a full semester or summer on top of a paid job, a heavy course load, and/or family obligations has become a key focus for CIC. Traditional Internships are a proven path to building employability and the professional networks needed for students to progress from college to career, but what happens when they are inaccessible due to cost, geography, and social capital?

In Alberta, Canada, the northern country’s energy epicenter and home to the 3rd largest crude oil reserves globally, changing demographics and stricter regulations are forcing the 130-year-old sector to adapt and displacing a strong workforce along the way.

RBC FutureLaunch is eliminating the ‘experience gap’ for Canadian graduates

McKinsey & Company’s landmark 2015 report ‘Youth in Transition: Bridging Canada’s Path from Education to Employment’ revealed that 83% of education providers believe that today’s youth are adequately prepared for the workforce. When you ask students the same question, only 44% believe it to be true. Seeing this firsthand, RBC FutureLaunch, a 10-year, C$500 million commitment to Canada’s future was created by the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) to give youth the tools they need to bridge the experience gap. Closely aligned to Riipen’s core mission of ending underemployment, RBC FutureLaunch and Riipen partnered in 2019 to deliver 27,000 work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences, with a renewed engagement of 20,000 additional placements by 2026.

Riipen Level UP lands 64% of participants employment while building skills and professional networks

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it turned our world upside down. Higher education moved online and the placements students were expecting disappeared in the blink of an eye. Internships are supposed to be a key tool in fighting the experience gap, but when the opportunity to get an opportunity is gone, how do students make do? Online, flexible, work-based learning prepares students–at scale–for the future of work, but hasn’t been supported by governments to the same extent as traditional forms of experiential learning. In 2019, the Government of Canada saw this gap and launched the Innovative Work-Integrated Learning (I-WIL) Fund to prepare Canadian students for an uncertain future.
